A growing family required extra space, especially when the children are home during summer holidays. Having already developed the loft and considered putting in a basement, the owners of this pretty Victorian villa in Chiswick settled their needs by developing their side return – The space between the existing rear extension and their party boundary wall.

Open plan to the adjacent kitchen the space can also be accessed from the sitting room via a pair of glazed doors. Typical of infill-type conservatories the space is enclosed on three sides by walls leaving only one glazed elevation. Not so typical is the exclusion of external doors. Whilst the space has achieved its goal of providing extra space for the family, a wide window seat in front of a traditional balanced-weight sash window provides a special place for the grown ups to relax and enjoy their beautiful garden.
